This is a book with some missing parts but with very lovable characters and some interesting facts dropped in for the readers. I get the idea that the author does not want to immediately reveal the source of the "war" but by playing coy, he or she made this reader rather annoyed. On the other hand, I loved sisters and thought their relationship was well written and rang true. Also, who wouldn't enjoy the "Swiss Family Robinson" nature of their retreat into the winds to fashion their own community in the caves? I felt cheated when the actual cause of the unrest was revealed in the end, and simply my opinion, but I got the idea the author spent too little time developing that side of the story.I won't give any spoilers but the logic seemed thin for the situation to spiral that quickly and to that savage extent. So I did enjoy this book but I did not love it like I thought I would.

Fears of Darkness The Fears of Dakota Volume 2 J M Northup 9781500128555 Books Reviews
Hard to put down. Solid first novel. Good storyline with connectible characters. Felt the timeline was a little fast paced. Looking forward to the prequel.
J.M. Northup shows a clear knack for storytelling in this promising debut novel. While I would have liked to have seen certain plot elements and background developed more, human relationships are portrayed well and characters are easy to identify with. Attention to detail makes much of the story believable and overall an easy, enjoyable read.
Very good and I'm looking forward to your next one. Had me double reading in the beginning but then things fell into place.
Unpredictable and captivating!
I enjoyed the story. The characters seemed a bit disconnected from the story, but as you read it becomes harder and harder to put down.
Having recently completed an apocalyptic story that has some similarities I really enjoyed reading this story. The story purports to be about the fears of three girls and a boy who are cast into a hellish nightmare together. It turns out to be testament to the survival of those who have the strongest will and abilities to make it through the nightmare of looting and killing that occurs in the midst of loss of control by the government. A great read. Scenario to scenario moves quickly. The book is well writing, the story a good one and the characters wonderful.
What would you do for love? How many variables of good and evil have been done in the name of love? This is a book from a woman who is very talented, skilled and certainly knows how to write characters you want to survive. It's an adventure that encompasses many key elements that make you want to keep reading and don't want it to end. I have to highly commend the Author for beginning this book in high school due to her own ailments, then raising a family and finally years later finish it to such amazing completion...Kudos to her fortitude and a book I highly recommend.
As Dakota’s safe, secure world comes crashing around her, she has to learn how to survive in a new, brutal world. Along with her boyfriend, two sisters and a best friend, they strive to stay alive and build a new world for themselves. Which wolf will they feed the dark wolf or the white wolf?
I was pleasantly surprised at the Author’s use of herbal treatment in this book. But, when you’re trying to survive the end of your civilized world, that’s all you’ll have. I’m a firm believer in the curing benefits of herbology, and her usage is spot-on.
I don’t agree with the premise of the plot. As stated in a prior review, it’s thin and I just don’t see the US falling apart as quickly or completing as she depicts. I do believe we've been complacent far too long, but any type of government failing will be due to outside sources. Not some gangs or groups of dis-satisfied people joining together. Her premise was more a ban on guns sort of thing, which I’m against.
As for the characters, I loved them all. They were very well-developed and each one brought a different strength to their group. I thought Dakota looked at the world too much through rose tinted glasses, but I did too at that age. At the end of this book, Dakota has to face the question of the wolves. It’s easier giving into the darkness and a person has to fight all the time to stay true to themselves.
I really liked the different settings, towns and other people they ran across in their trek to find a safe haven. I thought the ending was kinda rushed and didn’t make sense either, from no government to full military support.
This book is perfect for the young & older adult alike. It has a lot of moral challenges and issues that should be addressed in today’s society. I highly recommend and give it my 4 feathers.
