I don't normally read historical fiction but this was a great read. Gripping story with great characters. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
As a lover of historical fiction, this book was brilliant. Read it in a day, could not put it down. The end left me breathlessly awaiting book 2 in this series of 5 - bring it on! Very detailed evocation of the times and rip roaring action all the way through.
The writing maintains an absolutely breathtaking pace in this well researched historical thriller. The action takes place around the failed attempt by the Spanish Armada to invade of England ruled by Elizabeth I. The story is told through the eyes of Spanish solder betrayed by his army comrades and sold as a galley slave to row aboard one of the Spanish galleons. It is a different story from the usual tale of Sir Francis Drake's great victory. Our hero, chained to his oar, survives countless broadsides from the English cannon, unimaginable storms endured while rounding the north of Scotland and is finally shipwrecked on the west coast of Ireland. Back on dry land, that's when his real troubles begin. An exciting yarn with a fascinating description of 16th century Ireland.
The book is obviously the result of immense research on the period. It is well-written and vividly recreates the time - something like The Vikings series on Netflix. In both cases, the realism at times was a bit too much for me to handle. I also couldn’t love the main protagonist whose hotheaded vow of revenge for the deaths of his wife, unborn child, and father-in-law saw him leaving a young brother-in-law behind and leading another recklessly into risky situations. This book relates the first part of the Sassana Stone Pentalogy or, to put it differently, the start of Santi’s Odyssey.
I've been meaning to write this review for a while now, but i wanted to take my time to do it justice. My first piece of advice is to train your lungs to hold in as much breath as possible before starting your journey with Santiago. Trust me, once you start reading you'll find few instances where you can actually take a deep breath in! You will notice from the first page that this epic is truly well researched. Every word has been placed there with purpose, making Vella Bardon's style a true literary masterpiece. The descriptions are so vivid you can't help but being transported back in time. I've been anxious while waiting for Santi's targets to show themselves. I've felt sea-sick during his voyage to Ireland and I've known his anger as a driving force propelling him feverishly onward.
If you love adventure, one to one battles, historical fiction or just a great story, this is the book for you.
This novel is fast-paced, gripping and brutally honest. From the moment that Abel Santiago finds himself abandoned in the woods after a raid on a Dutch rebel force to his arrival in the kingdom of Dartry in Ireland, there is not a moment of respite. Yes, there are the sequences in the galleys and the crows-nest, but even these provide a vivid glimpse into the horrors of 16th-century seaboard life as the Spanish Armada sets forth to attack England. A very good read, despite its grimness. Although Abel keeps losing the people he loves--his Dutch wife and her brother--he is always striving to make things right. This is one quality which holds a reader's interest, from start to finish. And the headlong pace, which reminds me vividly of a modern-day thriller or mystery, works well even in a historical setting, where a slower pace and more exposition would be the norm
A fast-moving novel which I thoroughly enjoyed! I hope I won't have to wait too long for the second in the series!
loved this book, left me breathless.
