Funny, how timing is perfect sometimes. I was talking to a friend and fellow writer about how I didn't know the best way to use settings, and later I checked a romance on Amazon and saw this book, "Writing Vivid Settings".I got it through KU, read the first four chapters and returned it. Then I bought it for real, because this one is a keeper.
You know how you're not supposed to use adverbs? But how do you describe that "she walked slowly down the road"?
Now I know, thanks to this book about settings.
Besides explanations, examples and exercises, the book also contains what not to do and examples used in famous fiction. It's an excellent book I highly recommend.
PS When I told my friend that I bought this book, she told me that she'd experienced Rayne Hall as a fiction teacher and she was happy to learn that the courses could be found in books now.

I found this book to be a exceptionally helpful with wonderful ideas and examples on how to punch up a scene with more description. When I purchased the hard copy there was an option to download the ebook for free. I was very disappointed with the ebook version, though. The book began well formatted, but three chapters in it was like someone decided not to be bothered with formatting any longer, tossed it into a blender and said - try not to choke of this. I did. It was a miserable eyesore and very difficult to follow/read, which is very sad considering it is a helpful book. I'd skip the e-copy all together and stick with the hard copy.
The setting is when and where the story takes place. After reading this book, I discovered I was info dumping at the beginning of each scene instead of sprinkling descriptions of the setting throughout the scene. My characters weren't interacting with the setting enough. Also, I was over describing the setting and giving too many details. Rayne Hall taught me the importance of giving a few pertinent details and leaving the rest to the reader's imagination. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is writing or rewriting a novel. I took so many notes as I read Rayne Hall's "Writer's Craft" books. They should be required reading in Creative Writing classes.
Solid advice I haven’t written a review in a while, but I felt a strong need to write this one. I have many problems that I have with my writing. One is poor eyesight, but I have beta readers who help me with my revision, another is writing description. This book has cut that problem out for me. I have plenty of writing books, and some of the authors do a decent job of explaining, but I can think of only one other author that goes into details about how to describe something with such clarity. The author makes it so simple that even a child could follow her direction. She tells you exactly when to use the description to spice up your writing, and how to use it. Plus, she gives examples. I love that. I wish she’d write a book that show how to describe people. I’d love it if she’d write a book about themes. There are plenty of craft books on dialogues, characters, and outline, but I can’t find too much information on Themes and how to use them.
I have several books in this series and this one is a MUST HAVE for any writer. It offers loads of genuinely helpful suggestions and advice, supported with a broad range of examples (from a selection of authors, which is refreshing). There's ideas on using smells, suggestions for ways to use weather, lighting, location and much more. This is an excellent resource, with one small but significant matter that bothered me a tad; the formatting is rather neglected. Font sizes randomly change, sentences abruptly fall to the next line and spaces between headings are inconsistent. If you can look past that, then I highly recommend this one.
A 98 page quick read, that is packed with good information.
Read,reread, then study and wear the cover off of the book using it.
It is a must have for all writers, if you want your readers to feel what your
minds eye sees.

Don't outline your story, describe what you want your reader to see and feel.
Describing environments is tricky. Many authors either provide too much description, listing everything a character sees or hears, or two little, putting said character in the literary equivalent of white space. How can you get your description just right?
In Writing Vivid Settings, Rayne gives examples and advice that will help bring your worlds to life while remaining true to your own style. Specific chapters titles include "Smells for Realism," "Weather for Intensity," "Detail for Realism," "Symbols for the Literary Touch," and others. You'll learn where in a scene to bring up which senses, how to make your characters more believable, your descriptions relevant to the story setting, and much more. You'll also learn why all this works.
Chapters include examples, and each has an assignment at the end so you can practice what you just learned. Apply the advice to a story or novel in progress, or write new scenes using her tips. Rayne also recommends keeping a Settings Description Bank, a book or computer file in which you note specific things about places you visit, so you can use them later.
Personally, I'm going to use Writing Vivid Settings and other books in the series as guides for when I get to the third draft of my current novel, Bodacious Creed. I recommend doing the same with your own works in progress to make your good books great.
